Intuition Exercise: Sending an Image
Hereâs another exercise designed to help you practice being the sender. Because effective sending can be more difficult to measure, we recommend checking your results for this exercise after each attempt.
This exercise requires a little planning ahead. Select five or six pictures with specific images, which may come from magazines, books, or postcards. Donât let your partner see any of them. You may want to choose pictures that have an emotional content, as these are easier to send and receive.
Plan for your partner and yourself to sit calmly in a quiet place at the same time, whether youâre in the same house or in completely different towns. During this quiet time, you look at one image while your partner simply sits and waits.
While concentrating on this image, describe it with words in your mind and also look at every line, shape, and color. Then, think about all the associations it brings up for you, whether good or bad. (Emotions are important for making an image have more impact on the receiver.) Continue thinking about the image for about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, your friend should write down every impression he or she receivesâvisual, verbal, or emotional.
Try this exercise at various prearranged times for each of the five pictures. Discuss your results after each one, however. Discussing the results shortly after the experience will help you understand what impressions you sent that did or didnât work, which will help you improve your skills.
Lynn had her sending abilities tested while promoting the first edition of this book. She had gotten a call from Fox Cable News and thought it was just the little local affiliate station, but when Lynn arrived at the studio, it turned out that the show she was to be on was one that gets aired across the world! Was this broadcast going to turn Lynn into a celebrity, or would she just blow it completely?
During the interview, as if to add to Lynnâs anxiety, the interviewer put her on the spot by suggesting they try a telepathy exercise on the air. She said, âYou think of an object, and Iâll try to pick up on it.â The only thing that seemed to come to Lynnâs panicked mind was the word âstar.â So she focused on that. Her emotional energy must have been strong enough to send that word out into the ethers, because much to Lynnâs amazement her interviewer blurted out, âIâm getting a star!â When Lynn viewed the tape several weeks later, she saw that the look of relief on her face was priceless.
